The ASCII Art Ensemble started in 1998 and was founded by Walter van der Cruijsen, Vuk Cosic and Luka Frelih.
What happened to the ASCII Art Ensemble?
The original page has been moved -- too many new things have happened during the last 2 years. hopefully this page will be updated more frequently. Promised!
Free software
The ASCII Art Ensemble supports the development of new free tools and software to create your own ASCII Moving Media Converter (AMMC). Since the start several new projects have been started, more artists and programmers created new software and there were exhibitions, events and several public appearences.
First of all, the java-player. the original version, the asciimator was made by luka frelih. this player is public domain, so use it at your own risk. other players have been made by Thomax Kaulman and Andreas Schiffler, who wrote more beautiful sourcecodes. Note that this is really free software which means that it is still licensed (GNU) but you are free to use it.
ASCIImator. the original java-player.
Written by Luka Frelih and originally bundled with deep.ASCII - meme of the week last week. Here is the ASCIImator.java source.
StreamintoASCII player and ASCIITV.
This is another java player which handles .gz text-files. Thomax Kaulmann is still considering to offer ASCII mode at OVA.
Libbgrab
The original deep.ascii was recorded using TTYvideo for sgi. Libbgrab was developed by andreas schiffler for the ascii art ensemble as free linux library, with which you could do even more. libbgrab-2.0
This archive contains a lot for handling your video input (Linux / c++). There are more things at the ascii video page of the esc to begin website, there is a ASCII video+talk reflector, an Asteroid-remake to hit textobjects.
asciiMovie b1.0.9.app, a Macintosh QuickTime to ASCII converter, by Guillaume Stagnaro.
Drag and drop your videoclip and save it to text; get the latest version. Next step is to use the embedded application to convert streams, a QuickTime plugin? Who will write it ? (Macintosh / RealBasic).
Older things
Pict2AsciiFAT 1.03 is an .pict image file to ascii converter for macintosh ppc. Although it is stand-alone, it is scriptable and uses an engine, with which you can scriptwrite .gif files, like spreadsheets into diagramms. Somehow i have the idea that there is more to find.
